Year-End Notes

Here are a few items to attend to before the ball drops in Times Square. (Note that this is not intended as specific tax advice. These recommendations may not apply to your individual situation.)

  • Feeling charitable? Make your contributions by December 31st. But with higher standard deduction limits, you may need to be especially generous to exceed the enhanced deduction threshold.
  • New York State has sent “inflation refund” checks to taxpayers who qualify. But as so often happens, the state gives and the feds take away—these payments are considered nontaxable in NY but are taxable federally, so you’ll have to report them on your 2025 returns.
  • Owe state estimated taxes? Consider paying them by year-end to make them deductible on your 2025 return. With the new increased state and local tax deduction (up to $40,000), you may be able to gain a benefit from this.
